PRO-ACT Offers Training to Teach Tobacco Cessation Programs

A two-day Peer-to-Peer Tobacco Cessation Training Program is scheduled for Wed., July 28 and Thur., July 29, from 8:30am to 4:30pm at the PRO-ACT Recovery Training Center. the program is free, but space is limited and registration is required. This is designed to teach individuals how to present peer-based smoking cessation classes to support wellness among people with mental health and substance use disorders.

The Wellness Community of Philadelphia Workshops

The Wellness Comm. of Phila. holds several special events and workshops which are free and open to the general public. Currently there are a variety of programs for Cancer patients held at their Fairmount Park location. In addition to the Ongoing Programs, there are several special programs scheduled, including a Thyroid Cancer Networking Group meerting, Transforming Your Cancer Experience into Creative Writing, CAREing and COPEing Workshop Series, a new Pancreatic Cancer Networking Group, and many others.

Family Day Festival MARCH FOR PEACE

A Family Day Festival MARCH FOR PEACE will be hosted by the Southwest Action Coalition of SW Philly, on Saturday, July 31, from 10am to 2pm. The March will follow Kingsessing Ave., beginning at 11am at Myers Rec Center at 58th St. and ending with a pledge to "Stop the Violence" at the Kingsessing Rec Center at 50th St. The day will also include a Health & Safety Fair hosted by The Health Annex, with various health screenings provided. Everyone is invited to attend this extremely informative and fun festival, which will include kiddy rides, games, and live performances as well as food and a Drill Team presentation.

PCA Offers Farmers' Market Produce Vouchers to Low-Income Older Philadelphians

Phila. Corp. for Aging's annual distribution of Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program produce vouchers is underway. Eligible seniors who live in Phila. can receive the $20 worh of vouchers for use at certified Farmers' Markets throughout the City. Must be 60 or over by 12/31/10 and income eligible to get the vouchers at PCA's main office (653 N. Broad St.) from 9am to 4pm weekdays and at other sites while supplies last. SCHOOL BOOK DRIVES SOUGHT

Philadelphia READS, a premier nonprofit organization that strengthens the literacy skills of the cvity's youngest and neediest school children, is calling on the public to organize community book drives to supply its free Children's Book Bank. New or lightly used books are sought, along with school supplies. The Book Bank, now in its 5th year, is a practical community solution to a stubborn literacy and resource problem. In the last 3 years alone, the Children's Book Bank, based at MLK High School, gaver away about a quarter of a million books, plus various school supplies. To learn how to organize a Phila. PRO-ACT Self-Help Booklet Discussion Groups

Each month PRO-ACT (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization–Achieving Community Together) hosts a free Family Education Program to help individuals and families recognize and address an addiction problem in a spouse, parent, child or other loved one. Facilitated by trained volunteers who have been in the same situation, these information and support programs begin the first week of each month and run one evening a week for three consecutive weeks. Programs are offered at several locations, including: • Bucks County/Central • Bucks County/South • Chester County • Delaware County • Montgomery County • Philadelphia. 9th Annual AFRICOM Community Health Fair

AFRICOM, the Coalition of African Communities - Philadelphia, is collaborating with the Mayor's Commission on African & Caribbean Immigrant Affairs and the City of Philadelphia Dept. of Public Health, along with other community groups, to organize a Community Health Fair on Sunday, Aug. 8, at Kingsessing Rec Center, 4901 Kingsessing Ave. in Philly, from 12 nooon to 8pm. Health professionals and other service providers will provide general information about health services available at no cost to Phila. residents. Community members will be able to discuss their concerns with staff and volunteers in English, French and Creole. Blood pressure screenings, diabetes evaluations, information on prenatal care, and numerous other information booths will be there. In addition to health services, the fair will include a soccer tournament, children's activities and African and Caribbean music.

Evans-Munbower Mill Hosts an Archeological Dig

The Evans-Mumbower Mill is open Sunday, Aug. 15. Learn about the life and times of America's early millers as costumed guides deomonstrate the operation of the gristmill. A DVD program introduces guests to the role that the seventy-plus Wissahickon Mills played in the 19th century. Bring gloves and hat and learn how to dig, sift, clean and catalogue real artifacts. This hands-on history is a great way to discover local history, introduce children to our past or just dig in the dirt. The dig begins at noon; plan to stay for the day or just part of the day.
