Philadelphia READS, a premier nonprofit organization that strengthens the literacy skills of the cvity's youngest and neediest school children, is calling on the public to organize community book drives to supply its free Children's Book Bank. New or lightly used books are sought, along with school supplies. The Book Bank, now in its 5th year, is a practical community solution to a stubborn literacy and resource problem. Each month PRO-ACT (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization–Achieving Community Together) hosts a free Family Education Program to help individuals and families recognize and address an addiction problem in a spouse, parent, child or other loved one. Facilitated by trained volunteers who have been in the same situation, these information and support programs begin the first week of each month and run one evening a week for three consecutive weeks. Children's book author T.A. Barron believes that today's youth can make a difference in their world. He created the BARRON PRIZE FOR YOUNG HEROES, which honors young people from ages 8 to 18 who have planned and carried out extraordinary service activities to benefit their communities and/or the environment.
